If you want to improve a country, perhaps one way would be to improve the people who live in that country. Some among the "progressives" hit on a novel way to bring about such improvement: breed better people. The Eugenics Movement
If you want to improve a country, perhaps one way would be to improve the people who live in that country. Some among the "progressives" hit on a novel way to bring about such improvement: breed better people. The attempt to improve the genetic heritage of America (and to hasten the evolution of the species) led to what's called the eugenics movement. One dark side of progressivism shown by the eugenics movement is that some reformers believed they had the right to decide who was "fit" or "unfit" to have children. Instead of focusing on improving society through education or opportunity, they tried to improve society by controlling people's reproductive rights. This led to discrimination against immigrants, people with disabilities, the poor, and other groups who were unfairly labeled as inferior.
ReplyDeleteThe eugenics movement also shows how science can be misused to justify prejudice. Many supporters believed they were helping society, but their ideas led to forced sterilizations and violations of basic human rights. This demonstrates that even movements aimed at creating progress can have harmful consequences when they ignore individual freedom and equality.
I question who determined the people that were qualified to make these decisions. Can you imagine someone volunteering for such a position? You would have to have a lot of hate in your heart to feel good about making these types of decisions for others. Maybe it's a superiority complex?
DeleteA dark side of the Eugenics Movement is that certain people (Progressives) believed that they were entitled to decide who was superior enough to have children because they believed America needed a better quality of people. They used "Darwinian" ideals regarding "natural" selection. They prohibited mixed races to be involved or to have children because that resulted in a lower class of people they believed.
ReplyDeleteEugenics resembled hate, prejudice, and the violation of human rights, as well as decency. It seems to me they were ignorant to believe that they should be allowed to make decisions for other people. This dark side of the Progressives is a blemish on our history if you ask me.
Our differences are what make us unique and provide a variety of perspectives, which if taken all together improves our country!
The eugenics movement shows a dark side of the Progressive Era because some reformers believed society could be improved by controlling who was allowed to have children. They used what they considered scientific evidence to classify people as either fit or unfit based on factors such as race, disability, intelligence, and social status. As a result, many people were discriminated against and thousands were forcibly sterilized without their consent. This movement demonstrates that even well intentioned reforms can become harmful when they take away individual rights and assume that some groups of people are more valuable than others. Many supporters believed they were helping society, but their ideas caused great harm to vulnerable people. Eugenics also helped justify prejudice and unequal treatment under the law. Some of these ideas later influenced policies in other countries, including Nazi Germany. The history of eugenics serves as a warning about the dangers of using science to limit freedom and human rights.
ReplyDeleteThe eugenics movement shows the dark side of the Progressive era because it was a pick-and-choose idea that could have a terrible outcome for some. The movement wanted to improve the genetics of populations in countries and to prevent inbreeding. If you were chosen as a suitable match for genetics, nothing much would happen other than matching you up with someone else of suitable genetics and being expected to have a child who should have the best genetics possible. On the other hand, if you didn't have suitable genetics, you could have been sentenced to sterilization or even death to prevent you from "staining" the population with the continuation of your genetics. This idea shows that just because it is a progressive idea doesn't mean it should be followed through with.
ReplyDeleteSome things that I see that demonstrate there is a dark side to eugenics are when the article mentions "eugenicists have attempted to alter the frequency of various human phenotypes by inhibiting the fertility of those considered inferior, often through forced sterilization, or promoting that of those considered superior." The term "forced sterilization" is a powerful term used to describe how they would treat people. It could mean a wide array of things. If they mean altering the genitals of a person to prevent them from breeding, obviously, that would be very dark, but if they mean something else, I guess they would have to explain themselves. Another dark thing they did was embrace eugenics as a "scientific method" to improve society, even though the science was deeply flawed. One of the things they believed that is now deemed false is the idea of intelligence and morality being genetic traits, even though they can be changed and we now know this. The idea that they were going off this research even though it was false just showed how messed up the idea of Eugenics is.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading through the Wikipedia page on the Eugenics movement it is clear to me that it is far more negative than positive. I feel it gives racists a platform to reach their goals of a "perfect" species of human. While also manipulating the human race like cattle. A Darwinistic perspective would argue it makes sense, but not in the reality of hate groups. The darkest side of this ideaology was the forced sterilization of specific races and people. My favorite excerpt from the Wikipedia page was on Nazi Germany. Through their eyes it was illegal for women to get abortions in Germany, but it was legal to hold a mass genocide of Jews. This is exactly what is wrong with the Eugenics movement. I hope to learn more about the Eugenics movement in the future when learning about World War 2. Another part that was very interesting is the idea of Euthenics. Euthenics is the study of improving human functioning through bettering living conditions and lifestyle choices. I find this is a much more realistic option that is also healthy for the mass of society.
