Obama 2004 Speech

Barack Obama's admirers view him as one of America's great political speakers.  Not all would agree.  Here are some clips of Obama's 2004 Democratic Convention speech, along with some admiring analysis.

This is the speech that lifted Obama from unknown status to "future presidential material."

What rhetorical technique stands out the most here?   Logos (appeal to facts and reason)? Ethos (establishing one's personal credentials with the audience)?  Pathos (connecting on an emotional level)?

  1. The rhetorical technique that stands out the most in Obama’s 2004 Democratic National Convention speech is pathos, the appeal to emotion.

In the speech, Obama focuses heavily on inspiring and unifying themes like hope, unity, and the idea that Americans are not divided as much as they sometimes seem. He uses personal stories and uplifting language to make the audience feel connected to a bigger national identity. Even when he talks about serious issues, he frames them in a way that encourages optimism rather than fear.

There is also some ethos, since he introduces himself and his background to establish credibility as a “new voice” in politics. However, the strongest impact comes from pathos because the speech is designed to inspire people emotionally and make them believe in a shared American future.
